Part 3 Where next
Your first order should have been enough for you to decide if you like vaping. If you wish to continue then you will need some more e-liquid or prefilled carts, some extra spare attys and maybe an extra battery. Check out the part 4 on e-liquid which will tell you all about the different options for buying e-liquid. Before you place your next order you might be tempted by other e-cig models. This section will give you the basics on the various options that are available. It does not attempt to say which is the best model.
The carts and e-liquid that came with your initial order will have given you time to familiarise yourself with the basics of vaping. You will have perfected the draw to obtain the best amount of vapour and discovered the best way to keep the e-liquid flowing (new cart, topping up or refilling). During this familiarisation period many people still smoke traditional cigarettes (doing the digital switchover). Some people report chain vaping, this is a normal reaction by the body as it gets used to the new nicotine delivery method (Tip: if you are worried about the amount of nicotine you are consuming whilst chain vaping then just get some zero strength e-liquid and vape to your hearts content. Only use the nicotine e-liquid to replace the times when you would normally smoke a cigarette). Most people also report health benefits like the lessening of the smokers cough due to there being no Tar in e-cigs.
What follows is some information that may help you decide if you need a new model of e-cigarette and if so which model to choose.
More ways of improving the vapour. The most important way of improving the vapour is to perfect the draw technique. This does take practice, both to get the draw right and to make sure that the cart is perfectly loaded with e-liquid. A flodded atty or dry cart will not produce the best vapour and will hinder your attempt to perfect the draw. Once you feel you have mastered the draw and are getting the best from your e-cig there are several other ways of getting even better amounts of vapour.
Glycerine The simplest, and one of the best ways, of improving the amount of vapour is to buy e-liquid that contains VG (glycerine). Most good suppliers now do a VG based range, but if you can’t get any or want to improve your current stock then you can get some VG and just add a few drops to any e-liquid. (Tip: Glycerine can be bought very cheaply from good chemists. Make sure you get Glycerine BP (i.e. British Pharmaceutical grade) it can usually be found near the cough syrups. Note see part 4 on e-liquid for more details on mixing e-liquid and VG.
Manual Batteries Automatic batteries take a bit of time to switch on and heat up the atty, during this time no vapour is produced. A manual battery starts to heat up as soon as the button is pressed. Most users of manual batteries report better vapour production than automatic batteries as the atty can be pre heated before inhaling (Tip: the KR808D-1 380mAh manual battery will fit the 901 and charge in a 901 charger, this gives better vapour, a longer lasting battery and a sealed battery for dripping so is a good first upgrade for the 901 user). One down side to manual batteries is that they may not fit your current charger as the button may project and stop the battery from being inserted (This usually affects the single mains charger and PCCs). You can always check with suppliers what type of charger will work with the manual battery you are considering. There is also an extension you can obtain which allows manual batteries to charge on these chargers.
Freshly Charged Batteries Bit obvious, but you will always get better results with a newly charged battery. The standard 901 battery doesn’t have much staying power so the vapour production soon drops off. Batteries with higher mAh (milliamp per hour) rating have better staying power (Tip: again check out the KR808D-1 380mAh manual battery).
Consistent e-liquid dispensing Getting the e-liquid to flow correctly to the atty bridge will also help improve vapour. Carts soon start to run out of e-liquid and as they do the vapour production obviously tails off. Keeping carts full by replacing, topping up, or refilling is a skill all vapours soon learn. There are two other methods to keep the juice flowing not mentioned before- Dripping and Dipping. ]Dripping This is were the e-liquid is added directly into the atty. This can be done without a cart, or with a cart with no filler or with a cart containing filler. Some people just take the cart off the atty completely, but watch out for burnt lips. (Check out the forums for alternatives (MODs) to the standard cart that are better suited to dripping). The aim of dripping is to get 1 or 2 drops of e-liquid directly onto the bridge of the atty. Replace cart, if desired, and vape as normal until the vapour tastes burnt/dry, then drip again. Note: Dripping should only be done with a manual and/or sealed battery (one without a hole in the threaded end) otherwise some e-liquid may get into the battery and gum it up. Dipping You usually need a particular type of atty to drip as it involves dipping the atty into e-liquid. Dipping is not recommended for the 901 atty (it will get very sticky if you do try) but if you want to try this method then look for attys which have exposed bridges. (The DSE 108 attys are suitable for dripping)
Attys with less resistance If you are lucky you will find a supplier that gives you technical detail about the products available this will help you compare e-cig models. The standard 901 atty has a resistance of 3.2 ohms. Attys with less resistance will produce more heat and thus more vapour, but be warned they will use more battery power, more e-liquid and users may notice less flavour from the e-liquid. One of the most popular low resistance attys is the 510 it has a resistance of 2.5 ohms (Note the resistance of attys from different supplier may vary).
Higher battery voltage The better the voltage the better the vapour. Standard e-cig batteries are usually around 3.7 Volts. But there are some e-cig models that will take different batteries (or multi sizes of batteries), allowing voltages anywhere from 3V to 7V. A simple way of getting a higher voltage is to use a USB passthrough which allows for 5V vaping. Vaping at 3V, 3.7V and 5V is normally OK with a standard cart and filler, but when vaping at 7V the atty will go through a lot of e-liquid and dripping may be the best method of keeping up with demand. Also higher voltage will often lessen the flavour of e-liquid.
Different e-liquids E-liquids come in many flavours and strength and the individual ingredients in them may have an effect on the vapour produced. Try a few different ones, or ones from different suppliers. Note: Menthol flavour, or the addition of a drop or 2 of menthol flavouring, has the effect of better vapour even if it doesn’t produce any more vapour.
Longer lasting batteries Standard e-cig batteries were designed with aesthetics in mind (i.e. they were kept small to replicate the size and shape of a cigarette). Being small they loose their charge quickly meaning that not only do they need to be recharged often but they also produce less vapour when not at full charge. There are some models of e-cigs, and lots of e-cig mods, that were designed to take batteries with a higher mAh rating. Look for model that use rechargeable lithium batteries like 10440, 14500, 15270(CR2), CR123A etc. Using these batteries will not directly affect the amount of vapour produced, but because they hold their charge better they will produce a good steady amount of vapour with no drop off. They also need recharging less frequently normally only once a day.
Throat hit Some people get very excited about throat hit, others don’t really notice it and are more concerned with the amount of vapour. Throat hit is the tingly sensation at the back of the throat when inhaling, said to be reminiscent of inhaling a tobacco cigarette. The choice of e-liquid flavours is the most important factor for throat hit. Tobacco flavour usually produces a better throat hit. Higher strength nicotine and menthol flavours do too. Also more vapour equals more throat hit. Some people claim that different e-cig model also effect throat hit, but this is probably due to different vapour production rates.
Keep it simple A lot of vapers tend to collect vaping equipment there are so many models to choose from and the latest model always seems to be better and so it’s a must have. In this section are a few simple ideas and suggestion for the new user. Cartomizers (2 piece e-cig) This two piece e-cig has a combined cart and atomiser and as such holds more e-liquid. This reduces the need for topping up so is a very good solution for vaping whilst driving. Also, as it has a larger capacity, the batteries usually are designed to last longer, so is useful for outings. As mentioned before the KR808D-1 380mAh manual battery is a good first upgrade for the 901 user as it gives better battery life, a manual battery for dripping and it fits most standard 901 battery chargers. Purchasing a few KR808D-1 cartomizers gives the user a new model without the need for an expensive starter kit. Cartomizers can be refilled by dripping into the hole at the battery end or by popping off the end caps and refilling by syringe or topping up. They can usually be reused at least 6 times. Adapters If after reading the section on more ways for better vapour production has interested you in trying a different atty the you can usually but an adapter for the 901 i.e a 901 to 510 adapter will allow you to use a 510 atty on your 901 battery. Again no need to get the full starter kit.
DIY Cases Lastly as few suggestion on cases for your e-cig. Look out for tins. The right size tin, with a bit of sponge cut to size, will hold you’re every day e-cig bits and bobs. You can get tins to hold just batteries and attys , or ones that will take 5ml bottles, attys and batteries. It all depends on you’re favourite method of vaping. Slim line spectacle cases will hold 2 assembled e-cigs, look out for them in pound shops. Cheap fishing tackle or toolboxes are good to store all your kit in. Multi compartment craft boxes are good to store spare carts in. Please look for lockable boxes so children can’t get to your e-liquid.
How to compare different e-cig models and e-cig MODs So you have decided you want something different to the 901. The forums are a great place to find info on the different models.
Be careful about the claims made of each model e.g. if some one says that the 510 is the best thing since sliced bread then take it with a pinch of salt. What are they comparing it to? If it’s compared to a 901 then it’s probably better because it produces more vapour because the atty is of lower resistance. Don’t forget that the 510 will use more e-liquid, produce less flavour and run down your batteries faster.
Try to get comparisons of like-for-like models i.e. with similar battery power and atty resistance.
Using this guide you will have an idea of what you want ie higher voltage, longer lasting batteries or lower resistance attys. You might consider models/MODs that have flexibility in the battery department ie they take several different battery types. Look at the different suppliers and work out what models will suit your needs then ask on the forums what those model are like compared to your current model.
