Is vaping really better than smoking?
« on: July 14, 2010, 12:45:30 pm »
I went to see my doctor yesterday about a cough I have. Its due to excessive smoking. When there, I told the doctor that I was planning on vaping to help cut down with smoking. I asked him if vaping was better and he told me that there wasn't much of a difference between smoking and vaping. He used a few big medical words to explain to me why it was pretty much the same. Didn't really understand actually.

Does anyone know if theres an article on the internet that talks about Vaping vs Smoking in regards to ones health?

The generally unhelpful answer is that no one really knows, I'm afraid.

What I DO know, is that I have found improvements to my breathing and all my bronchial issues have gone completely since giving up smoking and starting vaping.

What we also know is that there are far fewer dangerous chemicals in an e-cig and no tar of course.

Hiya khue. hat you have to bear in mind is that the problems from smoking build up over years and vaping just hasn't been an option for that long. What I do know is that my brathing is a lot better, my sense of taste and smell are miles better and my general sense of well being is much improved. Some of the many problem constituents of tobacco smoke are tar and carbon monoxide, neither of which are present when vaping ... indeed the vast majority of chemicals in cigarette smoke are not present in what we vape and from my own known health improvements, vaping MUST be less harmful than smoking... not a healthy option, but a healthier option.
Happy vaping.

the only credeble study i know of was done in new zealand by several breathing related specialists dr's and a couple of professors and over a dozent trial users (if my memory
serves me correctly).
the findings reported are that vaping is about 97-98% less harmfull then inhaling the smoke of tabacko.
just look online.
a couple of american studies were allso held by universetys (one was noteworthy in my humble oppinion) and the reserch seemed genuinly uncomercial in reserch motives the healthbenefits in relation to vaping seemed the only relevant concerns, but of the reserchers i know nothing.
now, in the nz trials i have more confidence as i know a health practitioner in  the publik sector who worked with one of the leading professors of the trial and know said person is sereous about these issues.
see relevant link below ::)

Hi Khue,

As said there is little know, as yet on the health issues of e-cigs.

Check out the Wikipeadia entry for links to studies that have/are being conducted.

Not sure how well informed your doctor was on vaping....some medical personel aren't too clued up on vaping. The big difference for me was the lack of TAR. No more clogged up lungs.

Sounds to me like an informed "sounding" response from an un-informed person  ;)

I mirror what has been said thus far and I can safely say that I'm healthier now than I was when smoking, the cough has gone, the thick head in the morning has gone, I now have the ability to run upstairs and it doesn't leave me trying to breath through my ring piece, for example I managed the Convent Gardens underground spiral staircase in ONE go the other day and anyone who knows will understand that one .... I could have never even contemplated that when I smoked!!

Enjoy the Vapour!!  ;)

I can only state my subjective views as there's little scientific study into vaping and none into the long term effects (it's not been around long enough), but my view supports the others.

I breath much better as a vaper than I did as a smoker.
I cough much less.
I can exercise vastly easier and not get out of breath.
I don't smell like an ashtray.
I can vape where I couldn't smoke which makes for less stress in certain circumstances.

To me I've reduced my risk, if there are as yet unknown ones with vaping I'll deal with them like I did with the smoking risks.

Last year the walk up to where the best blueberries grow around here was arduous - its about 300 meters higher than where we live. This year I was hardly out of breath. Its quite a difference without the tobacco. I'm guessing the doctor didn't have a clue and the big words were to avoid making it too obvious.

As far as nicotine consumption is concerned, the amount your body gets over the course of the day is the same because you will vape as much as required.. your body will adapt to the new method and basically crave more or less vapour until there is an equalibrium etc..

The primary ingredient PG or VG have proven themselves to be healthier than smoke.. it's all the little secondary and tertiary chemicals that haven't had enough testing to know for sure. Pick up a bottle of LF and you will see all of those extra chemicals. The big tobacco companies say that if something is ok to "eat" then it is ok to smoke.. at least this is the simplistic way of putting their argument. Brown sugar for example is a common ingredient in many brands of cigarette. Burn that stuff and ihale the smoke sometime and you will definitely be doing damage to yourself. How all these flavours and chemicals in minute amounts change their chemical structure when converted into vapour is the only real concern I have.

Having said all this however, even if vaping was 10% healthier.. I would still be urging people to vape instead of smoke. It doesn't take years of study and a rocket scientist to know that vaping is, at the very least, marginally if not profoundly healthier than smoking. Is it "better"? That is a question for the philosophers of the world.. :D

When I told my GP i feared I was now as addicted to vaping as I ever was to Smoking she replied "well thats not so bad is it? We have no reason to think that using an electronic version is giving you cancer afterall"

She went on to tell me not to worry and that it was fabulous I had not touched a cig for nearly 18 months and she was recommending e-cigs to her other patients as was the practice nurse

I spoke to a cancer specialist last Friday regarding my mothers cancer and he asked if I smoked. I told him that I stopped two weeks previous and that I vape now, he said "excellent" "it's the tar thats the bad one, e-cigs are fine but that niccotine can't do your heart any good".

Well things considering I would not worry, he never said a bad thing about ecigs.

I'll add my ha'penny to this.

I was a very heavy smoker until I found vaping.  I can't honestly tell you it's safer - I'm not a doctor.  what I can say is that my breathing is easier, I don't cough as much as I used to, and exercise is easier for me than it ever was.  And this is from someone who could still cycle up a steep hill with a lit Bensons in their gob!  Ok, maybe I'm just fit, but I really feel healthier since I stopped the fags.  I don't stink of fags; my son thinks I smell/look better.  I can vape in my workplace....  the list could go on.

Read into it what you will, but I know where my heart lies on this.  :)

Without meaning to sound patronising in any way:
