Forum chat room
« on: May 07, 2010, 09:52:07 pm »
I have often visited Rusty's pub for the quiz nights, but as most of the quiz players are from the LF forum I think it would be nice to have a chat room here.

We could use it for the quizes and also for live chat.

It would be great to simply ask a question in the chat room and discuss the answers with other people.

Anybody elso think a chat room would be a good idea?

Ay Up Buggles,

Chat rooms are great in their own context,,,,,

They do detract from the main purpose of a site when there are few members.  My site has about 10 active members who post regularly - the Chat! is a laugh for us as well as people who do not wish to participate in Pub life!  Rusty's Pub is not a business, but Chat! (including the 'Fancy a Pint???' thread) - gives people an easy and fleeting option NOT to contribute to the site's main purpose - Vaping and Pubs!

If I ran a business - Chat! would not be an option due to its transient nature.  A business needs HARD COPY for people to refer to,,,,forum posts extolling the virtues of various products, a forum which has readable examples of FUN had by all, that are there in Black and White for new people to refer to - Chat! detracts from all that.

The Pub has a chatroom for anyone to join in and it is there and will be there for all LF forum members and other vapers, as well the Nutters!

Just my thoughts Buggles  ;D

as a person with well over ten years of chatroom running and administrative duty's in about 50 others chatrooms i'd recomend allso, keep chatrooms well seperate from forums unlessyou re likely to use them predominantly, then they tend to become the predominant medium(and chat room and forum + shop together, equals :to manny cooks can spoil the broth. not saying that is what would happen but the chances that it would are mighty strong.
I see Rustys chatroom for quizes and thats just perfect.
lf has a mebo chat box for costomers who need supports and thats how far i'd go. ;D

I have been giving this subject a lot of thought lately...and have to agree that a chatroom would spoil this excellent forum !! Rusty says it's no problem to use his chatroom, as we all know where to find it!! Why not do it this way...if 2 or 3 people fancy a chat, just do a PM and head for the chat in Rusty's... or ....have set hours every evening on non quiz nights !! Just my thoughts. ;D
Buggles...you are right about people liking a chat..as i love the quiz nights!! It would be good to chat about vaping topics too!!

Thanks for the comments guys.

I knew that there may be a problem with missing good info ie no hard copy.

But I also saw a problem with some threads, they start good with good info then they tend to turn into more of a chat format. This means that when searching for good info you have to go through all the chat to find the good bits.

I like the idea of a link to Rusty's chat room (if its OK with Rusty) perhaps with a scheduled Chat hour. Also the idea of the PMs to get peoples attention is a good suggestion.

I think we've got something here, where everyone is happy, without compromising the forum. Quite often when i have come in late from work in the wee hours, i find one or two people in the forum, and not much happening after i catch up on the posts. It would be nice to have a chat for a few minutes or whatever. ;)

We had a chat discussion a few months back, I think Rustoid has hit it pretty much on the head. Also, as a commercial entity it would be pretty hard to make sure that the chat in the scope of what we think it should be, i.e. police, for want of a better word.

Yes it would be good to use Rusty's chat more often, plus it might get a few more people in the pub forum as well. Rusty and Co have worked hard on this pub, and i for one am guilty of joining, but not making more of it!!
After i finish this late shift on wednesday, and back home in the evenings, i am going to keep the pub chat in another window, in case someone comes in for a quick hello or whatever. :)

Well, since there is a chat room on here now, perhaps you should assign some moderators to police it, people with balanced personalities preferably (bad memories of another vaping chat room), then give them some rules to judge by. :)

Either way, I'm going to log into it every time I'm on this forum, til its used, or removed. :)

It would be a good idea perhaps to show on the forum if anyone (how many) are actually using ajax chat (not just at the bottom of the screen), but where the chat button is.... Also I think you have too many rooms as it is.. I'm new here, but notice that there is pretty much a room/channel for every forum section that you have..

Can you put in a popout for your chat?

Out of curiosity though, is there a reason since you are running open source software that you would choose to use a windows 2003 server?

Bump...

Even I could make your ajax chat display how many users were in it with your theme and the Boardindex.template.php file. I'd be surprised if you couldn't.

I'd guess it would make a big difference to how many people would use your ajax chat server...

Also if you don't make it pop out then there is very little point in it being there.

Edit: What's with the windows server anyway?
